First-time Oscar nomineeOlivia Colmanjust won big — and she looked shocked!
Colman, 45, took home the Best Actress statuette for her role inThe Favouriteat the2019 Academy Awardson Sunday, where she gave a hilarious and emotional speech after her surprising win. The British actress played Queen Anne months before she’s set to take over asQueen ElizabethII in Netflix’sThe Crownlater this year.
“It’s genuinely quite stressful. This is hilarious. I got an Oscar,” Colman said as she looked at her trophy. “I have to thank lots of people. Yorgos [Lanthimos], my best director and the best film with Emma [Stone] and Rachel [Weisz], the two loveliest women to fall in love with and go to work with every day. You can imagine it wasn’t a hardship.”
She continued, “Glenn, you’ve been my idol for so long and this is not how I wanted it to be and I think you’re amazing and I love you very much. My kids are at home watching. And if you’re not then kind of well-done, but I sort of hope you are. This is not going to happen again. Any little girl who is practicing their speech on the telly, you never know. I used to work as a cleaner, I loved that job, I used to spend quite a lot of my time practicing. My husband Ed and best friend, I love you so much. 25 years you have been my best supporter and he is going to cry. I’m not.”

Colman was up againstfellow nomineesYalitza Aparicio(Roma),Glenn Close(The Wife),Lady Gaga(A Star Is Born) andMelissa McCarthy(Can You Ever Forgive Me?).
The Favouritefollows Queen Anne’s (Colman)supposed lesbian love trianglethat took place as she ruled over 18th century England in failing health. Because of her gout, Anne relies heavily on her adviser and secret lover, Sarah Churchill, the Duchess of Marlborough (Weisz). Sarah holds major influence on the Queen’s rule until her younger cousin, Abigail Hill (Stone), comes along and charms her way into the Queen’s good graces — and her bed.
She told PEOPLE she was not prepared to give a speech. “No, not at all. It was rubbish, really!” she said.
“I completely forgot Melissa and Yalitza as well. It’s not an everyday occurrence,” Colman continued. “So I don’t know how anyone is composed or remembers everything. But those two beautiful women as well who I forgot to say thank you too. It’s a very weird situation.”
As for how winning felt, Colman told reporters, “I have no idea. I could not tell you what I’m feeling. Next year, I’ll be able to put it into words. I don’t know.”
The film earned Colman thebest actress award at the 2019 Golden Globeslast month.
“I’m not going to cry because my entire table will point and laugh at me — I’ve been crying all evening,” she said in her acceptance speech before thanking her “bitches,” costars Stone and Weisz.
“I would like to tell you how much this film meant to me, but I can’t thinking of it cause I’m too excited,” she joked. “I promise I will keep on enjoying this because this is amazing.”
