Do I conceive in flying saucer or extraterrestrial visitors ? Where shall I begin ?
There ’s a fascinating frailness of the human mind that psychologist know all about , bid “ argumentation from ignorance . ” This is how it goes . Remember what the “ U ” stands for in “ UFO ” ? You see spark flashing in the sky . You ’ve never check anything like this before and do n’t understand what it is . You say , “ It ’s a UFO ! ” The “ U ” stands for “ unidentified . ”
But then you say , “ I do n’t know what it is ; it must be outlander from outer space , impose from another planet . ” The issue here is that if you do n’t hump what something is , your interpretation of it should stop immediately . You do n’t then say it must be decade or Y or Z. That ’s tilt from ignorance . It ’s plebeian . I ’m not find fault anybody ; it may relate to our burning penury to manufacture resolution because we finger uncomfortable about being absorb in ignorance .

But you ca n’t be a scientist if you ’re uncomfortable with ignorance , because scientists subsist at the bound between what is known and nameless in the world . This is very unlike from the way journalists portray us . So many article lead off , “ scientist now have to go back to the drawing board . ” It ’s as though we ’re sitting in our authority , feet up on our desk - lord of the universe - and all of a sudden say , “ Oops , somebody discovered something ! ” No . We ’re always at the drawing off board . If you ’re not at the drawing circuit card , you ’re not making discoveries . You ’re not a scientist ; you ’re something else . The public , on the other hand , seems to require conclusive explanation as they leap without hesitation from statements of abject ignorance to statements of absolute certainty .
Here ’s something else to weigh . We know - not only from research experiments in psychology but also from the history of scientific discipline - that the dispirited configuration of evidence is eyewitness testimony . Which is scarey , because in a royal court of law it ’s considered one of the highest forms of grounds .
Have you all play telephone ? Everybody lines up ; one soul start with a story and tells it to you ; you get word it and then repeat it to the next person ; the next individual then guide it along . What come about by the metre you get to the last person , who now retells the story to everybody who ’s hear it already ? It ’s whole dissimilar , right ? That ’s because the conveyance of information has relied on eyewitness testimonial - or , in this case , earwitness testimonial .

So it would n’t weigh if you consider a quick disk . In science - even with something less controversial than exotic visitors , and even if you ’re one of my fellow scientist - when you fare into my science laboratory and say , “ You ’ve got to believe me , I saw it , ” I ’ll say , “ Go home . Come back when you have some sort of grounds other than your testimony . ”
Human perceptual experience is rife with ways of getting things wrong . We do n’t like to accommodate it , because we have a high-pitched legal opinion of our biological science , but it ’s true . Here ’s an instance : We ’ve all see drawings that create ocular illusions . They ’re lots of playfulness , but they should actually be called “ psyche bankruptcy . ” That ’s what ’s happen - a failure of human perception . Show us a few clever drawings , and our brains ca n’t see out what ’s going on . We ’re poor data point - taking devices . That ’s why we have science ; that ’s why we have machines . machine do n’t handle what side of the bed they woke up on in the morn ; they do n’t manage what they said to their married person that Clarence Day ; they do n’t deal whether they had their morning caffein . They ’re emotion - free data - taker . That ’s what they do .
possibly you did see visitors from another part of the galaxy . I need more than your eyewitness testimonial , though . And in modern fourth dimension , I need more than a photograph . Today Photoshop software probably has a UFO clitoris . I ’m not state we have n’t been visited ; I ’m say the evidence brought forth thus far does not meet the standards of evidence that any scientist would require for any other title .

So here ’s what I urge for the next time you ’re abduct into a flying saucer . You ’re there on the slab , where of course the aliens do their sex experiments on you , and they ’re poking you with their instruments . Here ’s what you do . shout out to the stranger who ’s examine you , “ Hey ! Look over there ! ” And when the alien looks over there , you quickly snatch something off his shelf - an ashtray , anything - put it in your pocket , and lie back down . Then when your encounter is over and done with , you issue forth to my lab and say , “ depend what I steal from the flying saucer ! ” Once you bring the gizmo to the lab , the payoff is no longer about eyewitness testimony , because you ’ll have an physical object of alien manufacture - and anything you pull off a flying saucer that crossed the galaxy is bound to be interesting .
Even objects produced by our own culture are interesting - like my iPhone . Not long ago , the multitude in big businessman might have resurrected the beldam - glow laws had I pull up this matter out . So if we could get postponement of some piece of technology that had crossed the coltsfoot , then we could have a conversation about flying saucer and extraterrestrials . Go ahead , keep trying to get them ; I wo n’t stop you . But get ready for the Nox you ’ll be abducted , because when it happens , I ’ll need your evidence .
Many people , including all the amateur astronomer in the world , expend a lot of time looking up . We walk out of a building , we take care up . Does n’t matter what ’s happening , we ’re looking up . Yet UFO sighting are not higher among unpaid astronomers than they are among the general public . In fact , they ’re lower . Why is that so ? Because we know sky phenomena . It ’s what we study .

One UFO sighting in Ohio was reported by a police officer . Some mass suppose that if you ’re a sheriff or a pilot or a member of the armed services , your testimony is somehow good than that of the median person . But everyone ’s testimonial is big , because we ’re all human . This particular police officer was tracking a light that was flash back and away in the sky . He was chasing it in his squad car . Later it turned out that the cop was chase after the satellite Venus , and that he was drive on a curved road . He was so perturb by Venus that he was n’t even conscious of turning his steering wheel back and off .
It ’s yet another reminder of how weak our sensory organs are — particularly when we ’re confronted with unfamiliar phenomena , let alone when we ’re trying to describe them .
