This is the video for theCathedrals ‘ song “ Unbound . ” It ’s adorable ! And the way the light cube in the background pair up with the euphony is no fortuity — there ’s some really cool tech behind it .
I speak with Alex Green , the guy who make the dancing light cubes , originally a projection for burn Man a few years ago . He built , design , and programmed them in about four or five hebdomad — a feat everyone thought was impossible until he actually did it .
The regular hexahedron themselves are wire with adhesive light-emitting diode strips . There are two ways they synchronize up with medicine . The first is an implementation of a Fast Fourier Transform ( FFT ) algorithm within the cubes custom software system that lets whoever is manoeuvre the third power use the varying frequency within the music to tug the brio . The second is midi input , what music producers , bands , and DJ ’s around the humanity role to ascertain live and recorded euphony , Green told me via email .

In this case , you have visible radiation that both reacts to the music on its own , and react to how it ’s been programmed . Sam Pressman , who directed “ Unbound ” explain that how they were used in this particular picture is only one way of many .
“ The LED strips within the cube are in gross communicating with the organization , so they can programme specific inflammation actions for one part of the structure , really control how the visible light ’s moving , which I bang they ’re doing a lot of interesting adaptation of that , ” Pressman explain .
“ [ The luminance ] can interact with your heartbeat or the music you ’re playing or the movement you ’re making . So it ’s really next - level engineering science beyond how the light are built , from the color of the Christ Within to the frequency of it . They have complete control . There are really awesome things directors could do — beyond even what we did . ”

There was a huge amount of work that go into really making the dang thing — the software used to control them is wholly customized , and Green did n’t even know how to code when he commence construct it . Working with two programmers , Dan Kamisky and Mark Slee , he discover as he went . jolly unbelievable !
The weak block are a courteous marriage of several disciplines : artwork , euphony , aim , science , Green explained , as he told me why he chose the block shape in particular :
“ I was inspired by some of the audiovisual art that I had seen recently , and was dreaming up a slice that would be expressive both sculpturally and programmatically . Specifically , Amon Tobin ’s ISAM installation and my good friend Mark Slee ’s artwork come to heed as intake for the firearm … I like build up complex systems out of simple rules ; this is what has always grip me about physic , math , chemical science — the cosmos really . The regular hexahedron are a variety of forcible manifestation of a voxel ( a blend of “ loudness pixel ” ) , so they can be used as a form of crude 3 - D screen , and many different structure can be build up with cube . Despite being such a simple-minded polygonal shape , there is a long ton to be done with cubes . ”

And K’Nex - like social unit ahve charter on a liveliness of their own . First Burning Man , then the “ Unbound ” video , and since then , Cathedrals has been taking them along for live functioning . In fact , they appeared on stagecoach in the first place this calendar week in Brooklyn during one of Cathedrals ’ CMJ carrying into action .
They are really beautiful instauration . But it ’s even well when you may value how deep the tech goes to power them . graphics + technology . arrant !
