Last workweek , I was able to watch an early screening of “ No room Out ” , Sunday Nox ’s mid - season premiere . Upon my first screening , I was struck by a single view that disturbed me right . Upon Sunday night ’s viewing , I had the chance to be appalled by every other look of the episode , which was one of The Walking Dead ’s forged .
Because world , “ No Way Out ” was bad , from start to finish . Actually , lazy is a good Holy Scripture — it included some of the laziest storytelling since Herschel ’s Farm , although back then the show at least had the decency to tell no news report at all . This , however , is theorize to be the epical conclusion to the two - day , individual storyarc of Rick ’s Zombie Fun Run and the Overrunning of Alexandria , but it ’s full of cheap scare , cheap play , and an ending so unbelievable it ’s much a deus ex machina .
Let ’s just start at the beginning . “ No fashion Out ” take in place immediately after the mid - season finish — it starts with Sunday episode ’s post - credit tease , as Daryl , Sasha and Abraham run into Negan ’s gang . The scene persist in , and Negan ’s greasy police lieutenant spends the intact time switching from nauseatingly faux fellow feeling to aggravatingly threatening . The first real signaling that “ No Way Out ” is get to be problematic is that Greasy literally pulls the “ Do n’t worry , I ’m not gon na pour down ya … ” ( whips up gun ) “ … except maybe I am ! ” ( lento lowers gun ) “ Nah , entirely josh … ” ( whips up artillery again ) “ Except I am totally not ! ” At this point in time Daryl blessedly puts us all out of our misery by fool away Negan ’s ring with a garden rocket launcher .

While any TWD graphic symbol could die at any fourth dimension , it ’s jolly insulting to suggest that the show would off a major character by playing what it basically a murderous game of peep - a - boo , peculiarly in the instalment ’s frigid clear . Just as Greasy is trolling our heroes , the show is trolling its viewers , and the fact the threat is technically literal does n’t make it good or interesting . On the plus side , while the garden rocket launcher is an extremely video game - y solution to the problem , it is quite satisfying to keep an eye on those incredible shit literally explode . As expected , the law of nature of Chekhov ’s rocket launcher apply ; if Abraham found it , it was gon na get used .
Back in Alexandria , everyone else is in the accurate same place as we entrust them , include Rick , Carl , Michonne , and the Anderson kin , who are still wander through Alexandria in gore - breed poncho , hide among the snake god horde . Rick hold Judith to Father Gabriel to take to the church ( I might not have been so ready to hope the padre after his previous devilment , but desperate times , I suppose ) . Jessie begs her youngest son Sam to go with Gabriel to , but Sam demands to stay , more out of petulance than fear . It is the afternoon .
Several hours afterward , it is benighted , and Rick and the other are still walk through goddamned Alexandria . ( Go ahead , rewatch it . They part in the middle of the Clarence Day and are still seek to get somewhere well after the Dominicus has gear up . ) Perhaps because he ’s been walking among zombi for hours , Sam finally freak out out and just stops , even though they are surrounded by hundreds of zombies . He ca n’t move another step . Rick and his mama beg him to come , to keep walking , but he ’s paralyzed .

This is when Sam is eaten by zombies .
This is very much what upset me upon my first wake , and apparently I ask to excuse why to some mass : This is the first child we ’ve ascertain really get off on concealment . Yes , TWD has a long history of killing kids — Rick offs a little female child in the first episode , as well as Sofia , and of course there ’s Lizzie — but most of them have been dead , and more importantly the show has always cut down away so the violence is not directly witnessed . This is the first time where we saw a kid die , dreadfully , and I will to the full admit that I did not care to see zombies rip glob of flesh off a 10 - year - old , nor did I take to watch the descent spurt from the child ’s wounds as he ’s eaten alive .
But what troubles me as much as the capacity is that Sam ’s death wait on no aim other than to be upsetting . I know TWD has never shy away from being horrific , but when prominent characters have died their decease have always given some kind of meaning . Bob , Tyreese , Lori , the Governor , Herschel , the psychotic light-haired girl — their deaths were the close of their single stories . When they die , we knew that the characters would have a major impingement on the subsister , that their deaths would actually mean something — even if just from a purely narrative linear perspective .

This is not what chance here . The first one-half of season six forced little Sam to see some horrible things , including his mother murder a dwelling house trespasser . He ’s been thoroughly traumatized , with Carol unknowingly managing to do even more damage . Thus Sam ’s storyarc , if one be , is as follow : his life is atrocious and then he ’s murdered . If this is the meaning I thought TWD truly meant to ascribe to the vista , then the show would have truly empty the championship of “ misery porn . ” But I call back it ’s more likely they just wanted to obliterate a few characters in the premiere , and thought killing a kid would up the “ OMG ” factor . This is every bit nihilistic in its way , but is also crass and desperate .
Because there ’s absolutely no chance that Sam ’s end has any future meaning . When he gets wipe out his mom Jessie is so sorry she ca n’t move and is eaten by zombies , and then Rick is so distressing he ca n’t move and is nearly eaten , and then Ron , the sole surviving member of the Anderson family is like , “ sin with it ” and decides he ’d rather inject Rick and/or Carl than live , so Michonne stab him but Ron manage to dash Carl in the centre anyways . The entire Anderson family is dead , and I will be shocked if Rick or anyone else on The walk Dead ever gives them a 2d thought .
One more thing about this , and then I ’m done : Sam ’s destruction is dazed . I ’d in reality buy that Sam is abruptly so freaked out he stops cold in the heart of a horde of zombie . He ’s been through some very rough stuff , so suddenly ingest a spooky breakdown while border by zombi spirit is legit . What baffles me is why no one call up to pull the 10 - class - old boy along . He ca n’t weigh more than 80 pound . If he stopped in his track , literally every single mortal in their conga line of reasoning could drag him against his will and extend onto prophylactic . An even right solvent : Pick the goddamned kid up . The other part have to turn into knucklehead for this scene to bechance as it does .

It ’s bad , bad committal to writing , and I do n’t recall the last clock time TWD pulled something this crappy . Sam died not because the character dictate it , not because the story dictated it , but because the writers do it they needed to off a few character reference and thought this one would have the most jounce value . When I tell The Walking Dead crossed a job , I did intend that they finally showed the on - screen death of a minor , which , bleh — but I also mean until tonight I ’ve always felt that the show redact the storey beforehand of cheap shocks and gore . And givenAndrew Lincoln ’s even more visceral disgust at the script of the season 6 finis , I ’m deeply implicated that this is a argumentation the show wo n’t be returning to anytime shortly .
Rick and Michonne Benjamin Rush Carl to the infirmary , where Nurse Denise expect . But Rick , like virtually every wild adult male in this show , determine to use his excess of emotion by shoot down zombies . He runs outside into the zombie horde with a hatchet and just embark on whoop ‘ em down . man , am I right ? The others who are holed up in the infirmary quickly pull in that Rick ’s function to get himself killed , so they run outside too — not to save him from himself , though , but to pop out killing zombie too .
Somehow Rick ’s practically suicidal attack on the million or so zombies presently footle in Alexandria becomes a bizarre rallying cry for the townspeople . They see Rick furiously hack through the undead rather of care with his emotions , and decide that the best thing to do is connect in . Carol and Morgan , Aaron and Rosita , everybody goes out of doors and get kill what is suppsoedly to be an unbeatable horde of zombies . Even Eugene , because like everyone else he sees Rick trying to take on 1,000 zombie as a valid plan .

Rick essentially seize the Invincibility Star from Super Mario Bros. and builds up a ridiculous hit combo . And just like that , The Walking Dead turns into a video biz . These masses literally kill hundreds of zombies . Sure , Abraham and Sasha return with assault rifles , and yes Daryl makes a big pool of gas and sets it aflame for the zombi to wander into , but essentially about a twelve or so the great unwashed go on a Killtacular Killing Spree against the most zombies the show has ever portray . Not only is not a single person hurt during this ridiculous battle , they gain . This is , and I use the terminus with caution , unrealistic , even for The Walking Dead .
There are about 40 or so people right now furious that I am raging at a television set show about zombies for being unrealistic , but guess what ? That was n’t my call . It was The Walking Dead ’s determination to make the zombies a credible threat for the first 5.5 seasons , that even a individual zombie could be deadly if you were n’t paying attention , and that a horde of even 20 them could n’t be fight , only escaped from . Hey , commend when Tyreese run on his own cleanup spree with his hammer , and he fought like six zombies at once , and he seemed like he was sure as shooting dead and it was an awesome miracle when he do to quiver them ? Back them it was improbable , but still potential .
Now , plainly , our heroes can take out hundreds of zombi spirit each , as long as they conceive in Each Other or some shit . If this gigantic zombie horde can be vote out by bestial force and hand - bind weapons , why should anyone ever worry about zombies again ? How many zombies will be demand to be an existent threat ? Who will ever be dumb enough to be murdered by a zombie again , unless they 1 ) are asleep , 2 ) have a weapons malfunction , or 3 ) are a dumb little kid the author need to diagrammatically mutilate on - screen door in hopes that gore will keep people concerned ?

So bully for the survivors , because zombi no longer present a threat to them . There ’s other adept word : Carl does not die out , although he will be sport a wicked cool patch in the near futurity ( as he does in the comic ) . This comes at the end of the episode ’s best scene , where Rick spill the beans to Carl about the battle , and not because it was absurd , but because he regard their mathematical group and the Alexandrians work on together for the joint cause of saving Alexandria . It not only has finally forced Rick to believe himself and the Alexandrians part of the same group , it ’s made him bright for the future in a way of life that he has n’t been since he woke up from his coma . It ’s genuinely moving to see Rick beg for Carl to be all proper , because now he can finally envision a future for his kid .
This is The Walking Dead at its most triumphantly affirmative , a scene that would have had so much more impact had the terminal battle felt like it had any wager , or if it were n’t come up 30 hour after a child is eaten alive for cheap flush ( Rick has literally already forgotten about the Andersons ) . An existent feeling of hope is rare on this show , but it ’s integral to the characters — they need to have a reason to keep on putting up with the incubus they ’re know in — as well as the spectator , who need to a reason to continue take in the characters suffer through the incubus they ’re live in .
But here I am , worried that the show is already go bad to far , and yet Negan — arguably The Walking Dead ’s most horrible baddie — hasn’t even appeared yet .

I am not feeling optimistic .

Assorted reflexion :

• Not that masses who are as infuriated that I did n’t like an episode of one of the most pop dramas on TV ( inexplicably accept it as personally as if I ’d spat on their mother ) have read this far , but just in case : have me try ( and inevitably fail ) to head off the first waves of commenters at the proverbial base on balls : 1 ) I observe TWD it because I am paid to watch it , as I am hire as a writer and referee , This is how jobs work . 2)check my other TWD recaps , I ’ve bask it almost perpetually since season four . I have no docket here other than offering my honorable judgement ; 3 ) if you want to read a uncoiled recapitulation without critical assessment , just watch the goddamn show again . I am not here to transcribe the closed - captioning for you .
• A enceinte part of the installment ’s problem is that it absolutely should have been the mid - time of year finale . It ’s the finish of the storyarc that take place over two in - show years , so airing it three months after the eight sequence that lead directly into it does it no favors . A draw of the character arcs reckon on the development the first half of the season did , and unfortunately , a tidy sum of that work was kind of meagre in the first place . I imagine at least some of the installment ’s way out would seem less problematic during a time of year 6 binge - watch .
• example in point in time : last class , Eugene has gotten a small grief for being a coward . Sunday nighttime , he short has the courage to struggle back , a decision that only kind of work if you remember , “ Oh , yeah , that was an issue that was at least being discussed a little . ” Basically , Eugene has spent his intact prison term on the show terrified of face even a individual zombie , but now that there are literally one C to face , somehow Eugene is ready to become Rambo . Sigh .

• I should mention that in Sam ’s death does hap in The Walking Dead comedian , and is middling close to what hap on - screen . However , in the comic Sam starting freaking out and crying for his mother , which is what attracts the zombi to him and the others . There is zero dubiety in my mind that the show felt that get Sam get deplete while having a affright attack and shout for his mother would be too horrific for video . Their solution was to keep the child execution , but drop the plaintive bawling for his female parent that introduce it .
• However , Sam freaking out is a much more sensitive reason for the zombies to get him before Rick or Jessie could address the trouble . Again , the show writer really wanted to get that youngster murder in there , and did n’t worry if it made no sense . The fact Sam dies in the laughable does n’t mitigate any of this shit in the slightest .
• I dwell ; there is one someone who is nearly killed during microscope stage 8 - 4 or whatever you want to call the final fight , and it of course is Glenn . Glenn pull the zombies surrounding Maggie ’s little tower so that Enid can deliver her , and of course of study Glenn gets fence , and of class it looks like he ’s a indorsement away from dying . It ’s condescendingly terrible to put Glenna liothyronine expiry ’s door again , and that ’s before Abraham and Sasha show up out of nowhere and manage to fritter 30 or so zombi spirit standing mere feet away from Glenn using their ravishment rifles . One hit kills . Glenn of course is completely unscathed .

• Daryl . I make love you establish a Eruca vesicaria sativa rocket launcher , so now every job looks like it requires a garden rocket launcher - shaped solution . But you roll in the hay how else you could have lit that pool of oil on fervour ? A goddamned lighter . go under the hell down .
