It ’s that time of year again : The National Trust For Historic Preservation has published is one-year list of of the most endangered places in the country . And as always , it ’s fairly all-fired depressing .
The list is a way for the National Trust to call aid to buildings and places that are faithful to being demolish , paved over , and just loosely destroyed for all generations to hail . These are exit that are generally reasonably local — people in Lancaster generally do n’t give a turd about a sumptuous onetime building in San Francisco — but as the Trust shows , some of these return are actually relevant on a internal scurf , as you ’ll see .
This year ’s winners — er , losers?—are divers : There ’s The Factory , an LA nightclub that first rose to prominence as a center of attention for gay finish as Studio One in the seventies that ’s being threatened by condo developers ( condo developers are a recur theme here ) . Or A.G. Gaston Motel , in Birmingham Alabama , which served as a meeting place and planning hub for civil rightfield activists , include Martin Luther King Jr. What about Oak Flat , a National Forest in Arizona that ’s now being mined for ore , create a two - naut mi - wide crater ?
And then there ’s the list ’s boastful one : The Grand Canyon , which while it for certain wo n’t go away , may be change indelibly .

There ’s a Brobdingnagian controversy taking position right now over the Canyon — where two different developer are tryingto work up sprawling entertainment centers . One include a hotel and commercial area along with a gondola that would go down to the canyon flooring . Oh , and what The Smithsonian call “ an ‘ entertainment marquee ’ based on aboriginal American themes . ” It would whole commute the Grand Canyon — and if you think it was overwhelmingly crowded now , wait until it ’s got its own small mini - Las Vegas .
