I like today ’s gadgets just o.k. , but there ’s by all odds something missing from the squeeky clean pedigree and presently buttonless faces of iPods and the like . I do n’t have it away exactly what that missing thing is , but I know I see it when I look at the analog , knobbed squalor feel in Pocket Calculator Show ’s Boombox Hall of Fame . My favorite include Sanyo ’s 20 - pound MR - X20 “ Big Ben ” with the hero snuggle between its gadget driver taxicab ; Discolite , with its multi - hued lightness that flash behind speaker grills ; the crisp VZ-2500 with a phonograph record player in its face . And best of all , the musician ’s friend , the Sharp MR-990 Melody Searcher , with its build up in Synthesizer / Keyboard / Drum Machine .
I ’ll be happy once the minimalist movement ends and gismo get gnarly again .
