Yesterday ’s Futurama showed Leela search her creative side and set up a youngster ’s show … which ineluctably led to an total planet being plagiarized and orphans being used for cheap labor . It ’s almost as though Futurama has bad experiences with the idiot box manufacture !
“ Yo Leela Leela ” finds Leela return to her childhood orphanarium to harbor the kids , a labor at which she fail spectacularly with an unbelievably half - assed fib about a tank - topped , one - eyed princess who goes to an orphanage to distinguish some kids a tarradiddle . ( Like I said : Unbelievably . Half . Assed . ) She promises to make it up to them , but her attempts to write at the office fail due to her noisy coworkers . ( Bender got commissioned as a tugboat ! ) She flies off to another planet to find some peace and subdued , and she returns with an adorable news report about “ Rumbledy - Hump ” , a wizard land where five fantastical friend go on meek dangerous undertaking and sing educational songs .
The kids love it , and so does the show ’s resident shady businessman ( at least when Greasy Joe is busy ) , Abner Doubledeal , who commissions Leela and the Planet Express Crew to make a full - duration and , more to the point , very cheap children ’s TV show out of her history . This immediately takes off , rocketing an more and more egotistical Leela to the greatest possible achievement in amusement : being slurmed at the Old People ’s Choice Awards . ( She also pull ahead an award , but really … it ’s the slurm . ) But Bender discovers the frightful truth : Leela ’s fantasy world is actually a very actual exotic planet , and Leela soon make out her lip service , and she endeavor to instruct the waxy orphans the right deterrent example before it ’s too late .
“ Yo Leela Leela ” is another sport , satisfying little episode . Futurama has try farcical put-on of the entertainment industry before – there ’s “ That ’s Lobstertainment ! ” , which does n’t enjoy a particularly good report but is decent enough if you could stomach dangerously high levels of Zoidberg , and there ’s the utterly batshit “ Bender Should Not Be Allowed on TV ” , which sport Bender and especially Calculon pass new levels of narcissistic craziness . I would n’t say Futurama has ever made a great satire of TV and picture show – the Bender instalment is probably the best of the three , but that ’s mostly for Calculon – but I did love this episode ’s canonic message .
That message , of course , is that all minor ’s goggle box is basically malefic , made by heartless bastards and built on a hearty mix of theft and orphan captivity ( although Abner Doubledeal would call it “ espousal ” , I guess ) . Leela becomes increasingly desperate in her endeavour to do the right thing in the face of adore children who reckon her misdeeds were n’t even wrong . ( Yeah , you may require to record that one again . Sorry about that . ) The story is one that really plays well to Leela ’s traits , particularly her conflict impulse to do the right thing and to try that she ’s good enough at any cost .
It also allow us to see more of the Orphanarium kids , whose ongoing deprivations reach fresh heights in this episode , as they ’re reduced to eating books and raiding food waste for aluminum . And I always enjoy David Herman as Warden Vogel , who hits a noteworthy in-between ground behind tyke ill-treat jerk and easy - going , sound - natured bureaucrat .
Honestly , while I revel this episode , it was a middling slight entry , and I do n’t have that much to say about it beyond the fact that , yeah , it was pretty salutary . ( The fact that I ’m taste in the midriff of Comic - Con probably does n’t help my analytical abilities . ) I ’ll just cease up by saying that the one really endure - out moment in the sequence was the big misdirection sequence , which is a great moment in free burning forcemeat .
