Barrino plays Celie in the stage-to-screen adaptation of the Tony-winning musical, which premiered in 2005.
TheAmerican Idolseason three winner also played the part on Broadway,an experience she told PEOPLE she “hated.”
“That was around the time that my life was so crazy, so it was almost like carrying my cross and Celie’s cross. I didn’t know how to come out of the character,” she shared in an exclusive interview.
When she was approached about starring in the film, she admitted, “I was like, ‘I’m not sure if I can do it or if I want to.’”
Seeing director Blitz Bazawule’s tweaks to the storyline inspired Barrino to change her mind.
“He showed me he was giving Celie an imagination this go-round for audiences to see how she got through. I was all in.”
