Cyle Johnson, 28, and his wife Ashley Martin, 27, were visiting a home on Larkin Road in Live Oak, Calif., at around 12:20 p.m. local time on Monday, Nov. 25, when their 6-year-old daughter, who was playing out front, saw the crash, the California Highway Patrol Yuba-Sutter division wrote in aFacebook post.

The young girl ran inside the house to tell her parents, authorities said, which prompted Cyle to jump the front fence and into the canal, while Ashley ran outside to help.

The car, belonging to 75-year-old Robbie Carpenter, had landed upside down into an irrigation canal filled with about 2 feet of water from recent rainfall, per the social media post.

The couple found Carpenter unresponsive and still buckled in the driver’s seat, with her head submerged in the water, officials said.

Together, they were all able to pull Carpenter to safety, and they stayed with her until first responders arrived, authorities said. They added that Carpenter was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The California Highway Patrol further praised Cyle, noting that this was not his first time helping someone following a car crash. Officials said he was first at the scene of a fatal wrong-way crash in October on SR-99 near Howsley Road, where he helped an injured man who was recently released from the hospital.

“Cyle is that one guy you need in your time of need,” officials said.
