What if we lived in a cosmos where evil was an infectious virus ? Welcome toQuarantine Zone , a new graphic novel from DC and Alloy Entertainment . We sat down solely with authorDaniel Wilsonto talk about Quarantine Zone , his forthcoming movie adaptation of Robopocalypse , and more .

We also have some exclusive graphics by Fernando Pasarin from the book !

io9 : What is Quarantine Zone is about ?

Wilson : DC comics approached me about the theme . They had kind of a high conception idea , which was that Evil was a virus that people can get , that most of the human universe has been cure , and that [ cured ] citizenry are incapable of wittingly committing an evil act — but there is some subset of the universe that could not be cured , and they are all set into a quarantine zone , which is fundamentally just a gargantuan walled - off area of the country where all the people who are open of evil live .

So I was really excited by that coolheaded concept and decided to delve deeply into how the virus would act upon , how the mechanics of this would knead , and what it would be like to go into the zone if you were a someone from the sort of “ just ” part of the cosmos , and what the military computer hardware would bet like , because if a serious person is infect with the virus , they undergo a transition which is essentially like a psychotic rupture . Which can lead really chop-chop to an almost zombi - corresponding outbreak , where people turn malevolent and are able to infect other people , and it just spreads and chaos form of reigns .

A lot of your previous novel are about robots and A.I. What made you concerned in take on a computer virus story ? Especially an vicious computer virus ?

E. O. Wilson : [ Laughs ] Well yeah , I spent a lot of my life learning how to become a scientist , and in especial I did examine robotics and artificial intelligence , so obviously I ’m very interested in that clobber and I care to write about it , but that is really just sort of windowpane salad dressing — I mean really , thinking like a scientist , is what do in handy for research any written material assignment that call for worldbuilding .

So in this case , I do n’t have as much knowledge about biological science , so I went out and ask people , you bed , seek to figure out good contagion vectors and realistic soil rule for this to play out in . But when I ’m writing , what I really endeavor to do is make indisputable that the technological world is an annex of the aroused journey that the part are on , and this entire graphic novel is about twinkle and wickedness , and honorable and immorality , what it means to be good if youcan’t be evil . Does it mean anything ?

So as a result all of the engineering science , all of the computer virus and the rules around it and everything like that — that all really live to serve the story , and at long last go all of the little rule mighty and adjudicate not to break the pause of incredulity , that ’s all just homework . The real centre of it is making sure that the worked up level is compelling and that , you have intercourse , you like about these theatrical role enough , and some badass shit happens !

What aspect of Quarantine Zone are you most activated about ?

Wilson : There ’s utterly some really interesting interplay along the crinkle of what does it mean to be human in this world . I think the capability of dedicate an malefic act is intrinsic to being a human being , the fallibility , the ability to sin is how we are able-bodied to judge each other morally . And if you take away something like that , if you’re able to no longer enter ethically by being able-bodied to commit an evil act — that has shades of either post - human behavior or it ’s even almost robotic . So it ’s surely play with what it mean to be human in a way I normally do by using robotic character . But in this case I am playing with a wad of the themes that I love , is just in a fiddling spot of a different context .

You ’ve written comics like Earth 2 : globe ’s last for DC , but this is your first solo graphic novel . Did you love dipping into a Modern data format for storytelling ?

Wilson : I bang it . I have to say this has been one of the most exciting experience I ’ve ever had . I wrote this at the same time I was doing a weekly series for DC , called Earth 2 : humankind ’s remnant , and a hebdomadal serial is an improbably collaborative … shitstorm ! [ Laughs ] It ’s a whirlwind of activity that never let up , and write a graphic novel is just the right-down repose back translation of that .

So I was so well-chosen to be able-bodied to see both slope of that , because writing a hebdomadal serial is so intense that I could see how you could get turned off by it . Everything has to come out and you just have to call it good and move onto the next issue . Whereas with this I was really able-bodied to take my meter , work much closer with a single artist , Fernando Pasarin , who is awesome . He ’s in Spain , and the study he ’s done has been incredible . For me , my last hurdle before I publish anything is my married woman . She has to read it and not hate it , so have Fernando ’s artwork to show her was what at long last get me over the vault .

You of late wrote the mobile gameMayday : Deep Spaceas well . Are you getting more interested in recount stories in alternate media ?

Second Screen Portable 15 Monitor

Wilson : Yeah ! Storytelling is an evolve experience , and as human beings we use whatever technology we have in parliamentary law to tell stories . We ’ve been sitting around refugee camp flame telling each other story since there were hoi polloi , but if you reckon about how storytelling techniques like novels , how long have they really been around , when you compare that to the story of the human race ? How long have video games been around , how long has film been around ? And so if you start to look at storytelling it ’s really fluid , and it ’s always shift , so I ’m absolutely excited to use whatever form of technology is useable to tell a really cool story . It ’s amazing , diversifying does n’t pain your bottom line . I ’ve experience kids to run , you know ? [ laughs ] So I need to verify I diversify so I can manoeuvre in different mediums .

And also , it ’s just for your saneness . write a novel is a grind and it ’s very lonesome . solve in medium that command more coaction is really fun , and is really a relief sometimes . With comics , of course , you get crying gratification — you start seeing the artistic creation come in , and you also get that instant gratification of consider other really talented people take the stuff that you ’ve write and bend it into something better , and that ’s really exciting .

Mayday was about using speech recognition to tell a chronicle , because when I was in postgraduate schoolhouse I studied speech acknowledgement and it was still crappy . It has gotten a mickle skilful in the last decade , and I ca n’t trust that we do n’t spill to the characters in our story more often ! I want to sit on a hillside and speak ism with Gandalf . Now we have delivery realisation that seems to empathise the symbolic content of what you said [ but ] How long until it can sympathise our emotional country ? How long until I have to calm somebody down by talking to them in a video plot ? That ’s the story , that ’s the kind of hooey I ’m looking forrader to , and Mayday was a baby step in that focussing .

Do you have any updates onthe Robopocalypse movie ? It ’s been a while since we ’ve heard anything .

Wilson : [ Laughs ] Yeah … well I do n’t have any definitive word , but Robopocalypse was purchased by Dreamworks , so the studio apartment possess it , so we ’ll see . I ’ll be very interested to see what Steven Spielberg decides to direct after his current endeavour , so there ’ll plausibly be more news on that after he ’s finish directing The BFG .

Quarantine Zone , written by Daniel Wilson and with art from Fernando Pasarin , will be useable for $ 22.99 on January 6th , 2016 , in risible book store , and January 12th everywhere book are sell .
