The first English settlements in the so - called New World were far from glamorous . Indeed , other settler in Jamestown , Va. , were often starving , and forced to eat dogs , black eye , and shoe leather to survive devastating winter . A few compose account take things onegruesome stepfurther and suggest that some colonists even run through their own dead .
Those cannibal hearsay , it turns out , are true . A group of archeologists have found cogent evidence of our root ' stomach - turning eating habits , in the manikin of a mangle skull that is " absolutely consistentwith dismemberment and de - flesh . "

In August 2012 , a group of archaeologists toil around a debris - filled cellar on Jamestown Island — a 22.5 - acre peninsula just northerly of the lip of the Chesapeake Bay — come across the remains of a 14 - class - old young woman . They also found horse , dog , and squirrel os , but the real discovery was the girlfriend ’s skull , low-pitched jaw , and leg bone — all of which have the distinct marks of an ax or a meat cleaver .
On the young lady ’s forehead , we can see the choppy , almost hesitantinitial marking that go bad to pierce the bone . But when turned over , the back of the skull bring out the more efficient blow that split the skull all the way to the base .
The forehead and left side of the skull before it was pick together . Four rough excision at the top are likely the initial attempts to hack start the girl ’s head . Photo courtesy Don Hurlbert / Smithsonian / Getty Images .

There are marking along the jaw line that indicate the tongue and facial tissue were remove . There is also a puncture to the left side of the header that was likely used , in a flakey fashion , to pry it off and pull up the brain .
Scientists say this skull provide definitive evidence that colonists were haphazardly endeavor to take out the facial tissue and brain for consumption . In the seventeenth century , such flesh from an animal , say , a hog , for example , was actuallyconsidered a delicacy , which is why these despairing colonist might have gone directly for the girl ’s head .
And before you get too woozy : Yes , the girl was all in before they started hacking into her skull . The markings indicate there was no battle . However , the fiesta probably go down shortly after she died .
" The attempt to [ remove ] the brainiac is something you would need to do very quickly because brains do not preserve well,“says Dr. Doug Owsley , a forensic anthropologist involve with the dig .
So , what could have find to this poor girl ? Let ’s inquire :
In 1607 , a ragtag group of English adventurers set out to create the first colony in the so - call New World . The explorers land on Jamestown Island on May 14 , establishing the Virginia English dependency .
The miry ground was filled with disease - ride mosquitos , and the settlers did n’t have much time to found ahead of the winter . The newbies were also under constant siege by Native Americans , who had colonized this land long before , and were none too pleased about their new invasive neighbors .
In 1609 , a 2nd fleet of ship departed from Plymouth , England , with reinforcements . Seven out of the nine ships contend to exist a deadly hurricane and set down at Jamestown in mid - August . It was on one of these ship , researchers say , that the daughter , whom they have named " Jane , " likely arrived .
Unfortunately , the raw arrivals were more of a hassle than a helper . The ships ' crew hoarded what food they brought . Jamestown was already suffering from the worst drought in800 years , and the meagerly crop the colony managed to develop over the summertime were scarcely enough to tip the township that was now up to about 300 people .
By October , citizenry were hungry , and aliveness was only getting unsound . The subsequent winter would come to be known as The Starving Time .
Studying the shard of Jane ’s skull , researchers found an enriched " atomic number 7 visibility , " grounds that the little girl was at least at one time well nourish , with a diet rich in protein . This intimate that she came from a relatively mellow class , and that she thus did n’t make the stumble alone . But with no fresh centre or develop , Jane and her comrade settlers were forced to eat their horse cavalry , dogs , cats , rats , and snakes . Some would have even gnaw on the soles of their shoes to replete the sempiternal thirstiness .
One contemporary committal to writing Tell of a valet who kill and ate his fraught wife . The dependency ’s leader , Capt . John Smith , record the miserable news :
We may never know how many colonist were eaten as the wretched calendar week turned to months . But now , thanks to the find of Jane , scientists know for sure that it did happen .
After six month of famishment , only 60 colonists survived . vote down , the meagerly pack abandon Jamestown and headed down the James River , intent on return to England . But relief , leadership , and the seed of our future nation make it in the contour ofLord De La Warr(Yep : Delaware would be his namesake ) to stop them . De La Warr , his relief fleet , and 150 new settlers , led the colonists back to the garrison where the foundations were place for a comfortable and cannibal - free future .
The remains of " Jane " as well as her reconstructive memory will be on display in Jamestown . And with plenty left to scrounge at the original site , archaeologists will continue to investigate Jane ’s unseasonable end , as well as her real individuality .
