Chronicle is Josh Trank ’s directorial debut , but he ’s been making geeky Star Wars short films for years . Back in 2007 Trank released the short plastic film at odd , entitled “ Stabbing at Leia ’s 22nd Birthday . ” It ’s fundamentally what would fall out if the Empire rule over our modern day world .
Not only is this short film full of nerdy goodness , it also establish two thing we learned about Trank as a filmmaker . He has an splendid ear for capturing teen vernacular — without snuff it full blown Clueless and making up his own lexicon of fanciful teen lecture . And he ’s get a dark , tumultuous mind . We like that .
Akira with a touch of Big Fan :

There was another picture that Trank partake on that Chronicle seems to be channeling — Big Fan ( a picture Trank worked on with Rob Siegel , starring Patton Oswalt ) . Plus there ’s a whole heap of technical developments like the internal stabiliser that have greatly ameliorate personal motion-picture photography .
That does n’t think of Trank does n’t have his own twist on the Found Footage model . As time run short by Andrew ( who is the person filming most of the movie ) starts using his telekinesis to record . Which intend he can remove himself from behind the camera with his world power .
Teenage People Are The Worst:
Do n’t abnegate it . I was a ugly individual during my stripling mean solar day . And even today , I live in unremitting fear of the tatty pack of teenagers who do into my deli clamoring about their Selena Gomez , shrieking into their gadgets , and discombobulate bag of micro chip at each other for merriment . He feel complicated , ill-treat on , spend a penny off and perfectly full of invective for his good looking cousin . As Trank explained about the two boys ’ relationship :
“ The movie opens up with the first time [ Andrew ] has ever turned on this camera . He scram his camera , originally , to document what ’s going on in his home . His mom is suffering from a concluding illness , and his dad has been an alcoholic for many years , and it ’s been getting unsound and worse . He primitively starts filming for that purpose , and then it easy turns into something else … They have that family relationship where Andrew … He ’s — I detest to employ the full term — a loner . He does n’t like to be very societal , and his cousin-german is the polar inverse . He ’s very relaxed , calm , and confident . Matt both loves him as a cousin and is vex with him at the same time . He ’s always compel to drive him around and do thing with him . There ’s a lot of deepness and complexity to that relationship we show in the movie , which is fundamental to everything that unfold . ”
That being said , Chronicle also makes the case that perhaps , deep inside , we ’re all behemoth . Trank explained that his inspiration behind the flick were his own puerility daydreams of gaining the power of telekinesis , which always end in something raw .
“ As far as the mod teenage experience , this moving picture plays wish fulfilment without any cynicism tie to it . We have these scenes with our independent character out there having playfulness and doing things , they ’re doing it without any shame . It ’s not age - establish or generational . If these tike were in their 20 , I think they ’d be doing the same thing they ’re doing here . I wanted to pullulate all of these scenes with these actors and keep everyone in the present tense and in the moment , without doing filmmaker technique where you overtly foreshadow or attempt to imply thing about the report or musical theme and just let this act as out naturally . When they ’re get merriment and flight , we ’re up there with them , and when things go dark , they finger very saturnine because this is what it would be like . ”

As we mention before , here ’s the ill-famed snip of Andrew rip a wanderer to bit with his brain . It has a quiet , mesmerizing look to it attached only to the truly demented . Later on in the masking Andrew appeared on covert seemingly covered in line . And in another clip Andrew threw one world ’s motortruck off the route and was more than unforced to leave him there to die . It ’s going to be fun stomping about in this lineament ’s nous .
When a boy tries to move a machine with his wit too shortly , his nose starts to shed blood , copiously . These are all pretty important questions that were guarded from the press , so the hearing can remain coddler free . Fair enough . As long as the answers are skilful , we do n’t beware wait .
Still , we get nervous around history that start off , “ something exotic fell to Earth and reach out world power , ” andfor skilful reason .

A Rave :
Andrew and his cousin-german Matt pull up to a barn rave . The next span of clips can all be see inside this trailer where we see that the power is like a muscle . And if they perpetrate too hard it can crack . For case after Steve press a car across a parking lot and later his nose is bleeding . They also learn that they can pilot , move immensely heavy objects , and take form a barrier around their bodies , arrive at them basically bullet validation ( which you’re able to see when Andrew tries to ram a fork in Matt ’s hand ) . But the in force part is simply when they apply their powers for silly things , like deplete chips without any hand !
An Accident :

Instead he launch the truck off the road and right into a lake . Steve and Matt jump in to save the number one wood , Andrew freaks out and demands that they leave and not call the police . He is sharply out voted and chastised . Matt then makes “ the rules . ” They ca n’t use their powers in public , do n’t severalize anyone and they ca n’t use their powers on any live things . Andrew stands dispirit to the side . And Andrew clearly ignores these rules by rip aside a spider ( see above clip ) .
A Robbery :
Next matter you know Andrew is levitate his photographic camera and show his own armed robbery . Dressed in a fire fighter suit of clothes , Andrew soak a flatulence post in a panic , and unexpectedly blow up the station while doing so .
A slaying ?
The very last scene we were shown . Matt is unrestrained and drive through the street of Seattle while a girl in the rider fanny cinema ( we seize it was the earlier introduced vlogger girl ) . While he drives it looks like a tornado is throwing junk and cars all around . A bull come near Matt ’s window , and is straight off rend away . “ It ’s Andrew ! ” Matt shrieks . Next thing you get laid , Matt ’s car is levitating , then flying towards the Space Needle . The auto is drop on top of the turning point , while the miss and Matt screeching . Andrew appears , hoverin gin the air . It looks like he ’s covered in rake ( where ’s Steve ! ! ! ! ! ? ? ? ) The windscreen is ripped off , and Matt is sucked out . The railroad car begin to strike backwards off the Space Needle , the missy call . It ’s quite intense .
And that ’s all we saw . fundamentally , we ’re exceptionally frantic . It looks like a satisfying tiptop powered drama that delivers both blood and laughter . It ’s like Akira and Kick - Ass had a child and then cough blood all over it , or at least that ’s the vibration we ’re getting . Chronicle attain theaters on February 3rd .
