Hollywood ’s very own mountain lion is trapped in a cellar right now . It ’s a bizarre wildlife vs urbanization conflict , but it ’s also indicative of what makes this city so special : its nature .

I was on the phone with a colleague the other day when it came up that she ’d never visited Los Angeles . She lives in Maine and always thought the only only matter here was inane people with plastic surgery , frosted summit and leased Audis . I was sitting on my front porch ( the only position I can get cell reception here in Hollywood ) and severalize her that , from there I could see a mountain where Leo the Lion and bear know and , beyond it , there ’s really not much but full wilderness all the means to Denver , 1,000 miles away .

straight off outside my front gate , there ’s coyotes . Where Wiley and I hike up everyday , there ’s rattlesnakes . Most people do n’t see either , but they ’re there . The only grounds of the coyote you demand are all the “ Lost Dog ” card in the neighborhood ; it seems like a unexampled one goes up every day . Hate to break it to you , but your Pomeranian ’s not lost madam , he ’s lunch . It ’s just about rattlesnake season again ; I killed one in my drive last year after nearly stepping on it while barefoot .
Until lately , my preferred biker bar out in the mountains about an time of day outside of town had two bear cubs living under the syndicate table . Tony , the owner , fed them ice emollient cones . He nigh broke down in tears as he told me about Fish and Game coming to get them ; they exist at a zoo in Texas now .

While camp out 40 mile north of town , two year - old Leo walk into my camp one night . I run them off — mountain Leo the Lion are flying ! — but they just circled around and come back later in the nighttime to prove and get my food . In the same area , an old lion tried to rust Wiley one nighttime , back when he was a puppy . I did n’t permit it . The next daytime , my puppy and I found a herd of Bighorn Sheep that were thought to have died - off in the area nearly a century ago . We stalked to within 10 feet of them and shot the first video recording of that ruck ever catch . That was an minute ’s cause from my theater .
And you do n’t even call for to allow Ithiel Town to see wildlife . A Quaker lives in Eagle Rock , where there ’s a park he can take his dog to let it hunt hare . A few miles from there , that same dog-iron scared a mountain Leo up a tree diagram .

In the weewee , just a hundred thou or so off Malibu ’s beaches , there ’s great lily-white sharks . They eat the sea lions . Go out a little further and you’re able to overtake tuna . A couple years ago , thousands andthousands of giant calamari intrude on local waters , washing up on beaches up and down the seacoast and being reeled in by fishermen .
You see and try about wildlife when there ’s a struggle . A mountain lion going about its business in the woods , when no one ’s around , is n’t word . Most people do n’t bonk how to see animals when they ’re outdoors . I ’ve even watch people walk just column inch away from a rattlesnake while boost Runyon . Surfers do n’t make a big deal out of check sharks . But , the amount of wildlife engagement we have here in LA is indicative of how much nature thrives on the metropolis ’s fringes and in the places where the wild stay within its border .

New York has Central Park , where pigeon live . LA has Griffith Park , with its very own lion ( currently trap in a cellar ) , bay lynx , coyotes , mule cervid , falcon and hawk . There is no other city in the human beings that ’s on the musical scale of a Paris , London or Tokyo that can boast such divers wild inhabitant or that can claim a savage lion lives within its delimitation and is regularly visited by several others .
I be active here from New York for that grounds four years ago . Where once I had to get on a carpenter’s plane and aviate to California to do stuff outdoors , now I just exist here and walk out my front door . Every day I see coyotes and hawk ; twice a year or so I see a mountain social lion ; I ’ve snorkeled through a kelp forest with shark ; and I track down pig about two hours by . Then I come home , take a rain shower and go sit around in a restaurant with really effective food where my waiter wants to spill the beans to me about his acting life history and the rest of the guys in the piazza get their eyebrows plucked professionally . Every stereotype you ’ve ever heard about LA is true , but if you ’re prepared to put up with that , this metropolis give you unprecedented exposure and access to nature . And the lionjust got out of the basement !
