It has n’t been a great decade for air travelling . And while crappily designed boarding passes are n’t at the very top of my lean of axes to grind with the air hose industry , they ’re more crucial than you might intend . Just take a look at this great version by UK designer Peter Smart for proof .
Smart is substantially known for his50 Problems in 50 Daysproject , which chair him across the world on a 14 - trajectory marathon to solve , as the name suggests , 50 every - day problem . “ Somewhere between check - in and boarding , I realized something , ” he writes . “ embarkment passes are reasonably fearsome . ”
Indeed . And thoughother designers have attempted redesigns , not much has change :

Smart decided to try on his script , and what ensue is an exceedingly sensible and thoughtful redesign . you could take Smart ’s own presentationhere , but the condense reading is go like this .
First , Smart give the walk a new , perpendicular format that fits perfectly into a passport when folded in half ( and can be printed on airlines ’ current machines ) . This is design to preclude the inevitable misplacement or watering of the current tenacious , horizontal fling :
He then fix up a simple-minded info hierarchy , which engineer information chronologically — so final , then gate , then seat , then arrival , and so forth . Finally , an renovation of the case design adds to the readability and detracts from the sheer optic clutter :

Beyond the sheer practicality of Smart ’s root , my reaction — similar to that of many , I ’m guessing — was to wonder why even bother , give that mobile embarkation pass are getting more and more common ?
I emailed Smart to ask , and while he agreed that digital pass are increasing , gazillion of paper passes are still printed every year — which cook it a problem worth solving . Beyond that , Smart raised another interesting point :
… The answer is n’t the most crucial part of this project . It is the thinking : it is the willingness to interview what is otherwise accepted in parliamentary law to endeavor for honorable , more useable and useful . This implement to paper bye , eastward - tickets , check - in and every part of air hose experience . The solution is only a modest part of the story . It is the ability to wonder the condition quo — the notion that we can endeavour to make good experiences for masses — that has caught the tending of hundreds of chiliad of masses around the existence .

“ They are crying out for it , ” he add . “ The question is will airlines hear ? ” [ Peter Smart;Daring Fireball ]
