If you ’re looking for a quick , spooky read — or twenty — this Halloween weekend , control out Split Lip , a horror anthology webcomic , where you ’ll discover dozens of scary tales spanning the multitudinous subgenres .
Each installment of Split Lip is a self - hold back horror story , written by Sam Costello and instance by a unlike artist . Costello not only has a knack for match creative person with narration ; he ’s also an obvious devotee of horror in its many forms . He distinctly has his own preoccupations ( insects and spider are a recurring theme ) , he likes to test the waters of and pay off tribute to various horror tropes .
get an urge to read some physical structure horror ? Try“Long Live the King . ”If you ’re hankering for supernatural justness , there’s“Mujer . ”If you have a fascination with nonparallel killer or corrupters of clean-handed minds , check out“Bad Radio . ”“Ashes to Ashes”offers up scriptural repulsion , while“Heading South”is a solid moment of red region . But Costello offer up mess of innovations of his own . There ’s the wondrously surprising“Straw Men,”which get as a rural tale of treason and fury and suddenly swerves into something even more sinister . And in“Face Blind,”he take prosopagnosia and change by reversal it into a visually striking ( not to note eerie ) equipment .
Although a handful of the Split Lip stories are morality tales — or narration where a funny cat contact with an unfortunate end — others are all the more terrific because speculative end come without rhyme or grounds . In“The Consequences of a Little Alone Time”and“The Cousin of Death,”our friend fall into alarm circumstances for no reason other than bad fortune — infelicitous accident of birth or circumstance . But it ’s the story“An Old Man , Looking”that most clearly connect those seemingly arbitrary horrors to the substantial world . It ’s an especially powerful spell , one in which a young male child sees a mysterious and monstrous horror alongside a more conversant , unseeable one : cancer .
The end result of all these experimentation is that Split Lip put up a nice sampler mix of repulsion stories , one clearly inspired by The Twilight Zone and made with mint of genre love . Although not ever news report in the pack is a hit , and not every story is going to be for everyone , there ’s something in Split Lip for every type of repugnance buff .
